Welcome to our Queer Yoga community!

Queer Yoga open to everyone!

Our community is for LGBTQ+ people to practice more accessible yoga in a group setting. We are a team of community yoga teachers who believe we should all feel safe, welcomed and celebrated through our yoga practice. We run 4 weekly donation based classes in Edinburgh and 1 weekly Zoom class. These follow a 60 minute gentle movement practice, followed by around 30 minutes for (optional) tea and a chat. We also host retreats, organise social meet ups and attend events. If you’d like some more information before coming along to one of our classes or events and can’t find it here on our website, please do get in touch.

“It is the only queer community I am part of and it has made me realise how validating it is to spend time with other lgbtq+ people. The yoga classes themselves have been a really grounding part of my life especially in the last few months where I've had lots of change going on. I really love the option to stay for a cup of tea after class, for me this is the bit that gives space for the creation of community.”

Queer Yoga at The Salisbury Centre, mats laid out with large bay window infront

2 Salisbury Road, Edinburgh, EH16 5AB

Where?

At the moment we have one weekly class at the beautiful Salisbury Centre, which is an inclusive, welcoming and community focused organisation that hosts a variety of creative, spiritual and holistic activities. This class takes place every Friday morning at 10am.

Class is usually on the first floor in a spacious studio with large bay windows over looking their garden; unfortunately there is no lift. The stairs have a railing on one side. The studio is usually naturally lit and we often play some quiet music. There is a road at the back of the studio so you may hear some traffic, and the building is used by others so you might hear doors closing or other noises.

We are sometimes located on the ground floor in a slightly smaller studio (the Art Room), with skylight windows in the ceiling and some small windows at the front. It is usually naturally lit or with one lamp on. The art room is wheelchair accessible.

There is a schedule at the front door that will say which room we are in but please check with us in advance if you need to know beforehand. There are all gender toilets available throughout the building and one wheelchair accessible toilet. The front door is usually locked so to enter the building please read the schedule on the window and press the doorbell of either the studio or the art room. One of us should be at the front door in the 5-10 minutes before class starts to welcome you and let you in.

Yoga mats, blankets and blocks are all provided, but feel free to bring your own. If you’d prefer to practice on a chair, please just let us know in advance. Usual class size is 6-12 people.

Lila yoga studio with mats out

37 Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh, EH10 4HJ

We also have two weekly classes at the gorgeous Lila Yoga Studio, which is a warm and nurturing ground floor space, based in Bruntsfield.

When arriving at the building the front door should be open with a place to leave shoes at the door and a space to leave bags and coats at the back of the studio. If the door is locked please just knock and someone will welcome you in. The front doorway is usually 25.5 inches wide as only half is open but the other side can be opened to make it 36.5 inches if needed. There is a very small (less than 1 inch) step to get in. There are all gender toilets at the studio, without grabrails. Doorway to toilets are 26 inches wide.

On Wednesdays we are usually in the studio at the back of the building. To get there, there are two steps together: first 6 inch, second 6.5 inch. This back studio has no windows and the space will be quite dimly lit.

On Fridays we are usually in the studio at the front. This space has a large window at the front that looks onto the road - it comes half way down the wall with plants on the shelf so people can't see much looking in. There may be sounds of traffic and people passing on the street. We will usually play some quiet music. As the class is in the evening in winter it will be dark outside, there is gentle lighting in the studio.

Yoga mats, blankets, blocks, straps and eye pillows are provided, but feel free to bring your own. If you’d prefer to practice on a chair, just let us know in advance. Group size tends to be around 6-12 people.

Street view of Coven studios, black painted frames and large windows

13-15 Ferry Road, Edinburgh, EH6 4AD

We have a new weekly class at the beautiful Coven Studios, a ground floor space based in Leith. These take place on Monday evenings.

When arriving at the building the front door should be open with someone to welcome you and direct you to the space. There will be space to leave shoes, bags and coats. There are single stall all gender toilets available, without grab rails.

We will usually have some quiet music playing during class. The space we practice in has no windows, so in the evening lighting tends to be dim and warm. There may be some sounds of traffic or people passing on the street.

Yoga mats and blocks are provided, but feel free to bring your own. You are welcome to bring a blanket, strap or bolster if you’d like to use them. If you’d prefer to practice on a chair, just let us know in advance. Group size tends to be around 6-11 people.

“As a disabled queer person with social anxiety and sensory processing difficulties lots of queer spaces feel overwhelming to me. Queer yoga is great because it allows me to be in a space where I can meet new people at a pace that feels manageable. The teaching has been really wonderful with lots of options so that people with different levels of experience and different bodies can join in. I've never been made to feel odd for practicing in a chair. The space is up some stairs but it has beautiful light and a view into the lovely gardens at the Salisbury Centre so it feels like a very nurturing experience. Overall I am extremely grateful that this affordable and welcoming class exists. Especially at a time when society feels increasingly hostile towards queer people. A big thank you to everyone involved in organising it.’”
